| Notes | It is expected that a date of birth would be known for the vast majority of students. Where this is not the case, the field should not be returned HESA monitors the number of unknown birth dates submitted by each provider. For students entering through UCAS, this information will be available via the *J transaction. All date fields must be completed using the ISO8601 format of YYYY-MM-DD. |
| Reason Required | The date of birth is required to generate the student's age and to provide an additional item of information for linking between student collections and other data sources. To permit aged based analysis, to monitor equality, diversity and inclusion in the higher education sector and support providers in meeting their obligations under the Equality Act 2010. |
