This field records the result of the qualification type indicated in EntryQualificationAward.QUALTYPEID.

This field is case sensitive and must be returned in upper or lower case depending upon how each valid entry is defined within the coding frame.

The awarding bodies have given their consent, via the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), for some of the results data that they forward to UCAS to be shared with HEPs for admission purposes, to also be used in preparing the Student Record from 2007/08. This data will be made available to providers by UCAS (through the *J transaction). The HESA record will work to the existing UCAS coding frame.

The coding frame used by HESA contains both Awarding Body Linkage (ABL) and non-ABL qualifications.

The data made available to providers by UCAS (through the *J transaction) only contains ABL qualifications, this results in HESA having a more expansive list than that published by UCAS and a variation in the field length is to be expected.

The qualification grades published by UCAS which have been verified by the ABL process will not be greater than a field length of 10.

Level three qualifications

For level three tariff bearing qualifications the valid entries are provided by UCAS and will be made available to providers who use UCAS through the *J transaction. Providers in England who do not use UCAS will need to use the same coding frame for their students qualifications.

Providers in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are encouraged to provide this information for students who did not enter via UCAS where it is available.

For these qualifications, grades may be valid with a number of qualifications, so the meaning of each grade can vary depending on which qualification it is associated with.

Teacher training students

The HE level valid entries are required for teacher training students in Northern Ireland and Wales only.

For students holding overseas qualifications, providers will need to enter in the classification, based on their assessment of the trainee's overseas degree, in the EntryQualificationAward.ENTRYQUALAWARDRESULT field. Providers should not use code 9999 (Not applicable) where an appropriate equivalent code exists.

It is at the discretion of the provider to decide upon the UK equivalent class of the non-UK degree. For example, if a trainee has an overseas degree and following assessment by the provider it is deemed equivalent to a 2:2 classification (UK degree), then the provider may enter 2:2 in EntryQualificationAward.ENTRYQUALAWARDRESULT. In these cases, one of the non-UK valid entries should be returned in EntryQualificationAward.QUALTYPEID.

T-level qualifications

It is advised that students in receipt of a passing grade for T-level qualifications are returned as either 'P (C or above on the core)' or 'P (D or E on the core)'. T-level qualifications returned as 'P' will not be considered valid and will not attract tariff points.
