Below are links to tools that help supplement the information provided within the HESA coding manuals. For a full list of HESA coding manuals please go to the Data Collection section of the HESA website.
Note: All data currently available from the webpages included under 'Coding Manual Tools' will be up to date in line with the latest coding manual release for Student (056) collections and other data streams will also be introduced to these pages when applicable.
Collection overview tools
+ Collection Data Models
Additional representations of collection data models available in JSON file format.
The HESA Calendar has been created to be a single source of all dates pertaining to HESA data collections, this includes data collection schedule dates, coding manual release dates and other associated HESA date types.
Data tools for collection fields and valid entries
+ Derived Fields and their dependencies
Derived fields are created and included as part of data delivery and are based upon data from one or more of the collected fields, coding frame enhancements and / or other derived fields. Details of derived field and the fields / enhancements upon which they are dependent are provided as information for end users of the data.
Data is supplied to providers and statutory customers via delivery files or downloadable files from the HESA Data Platform (HDP). The structure of these files and their component entities and fields along with associated properties can be viewed or downloaded in machine readable formats (JSON or .csv) are provided for end users of this data.
Coding frames contain the valid entries applicable to the fields within a collection. More than one field can share a coding frame where they have valid entries in common. Coding frames are enhanced with additional metadata detailing how valid entries may be grouped or segmented, these are called 'groupings' and 'markers' (coding frame enhancements are primarily used in the creation of derived fields and validation rules). Details of coding frames and their enhancements are provided as information for end users of the data.
To assist with comparisons of data between Student 051 / Student Alternative 054 and Student (Data Futures) 056 data streams a set of mapping tools and downloadable files have been developed.
+ The Higher Education Classification of Subjects (HECoS)
Details of HECoS vocabulary, definitions and preferred terms along with associated CAH codes. The section also includes an interactive tool to search for and display details of HECoS codes and related data.
Industrial and occupational classification data tools (SIC / SOC)
+ SIC / SOC Coding Frames
Details of various interations of the ONS industrial and occupational classification coding frames (SIC and SOC). For the SIC2007 and SOC2020 interations of these coding frames there is an interactive presentaion of the data allowing the end user to restrict the list to show only those codes (at all levels) that relate to or are grouped with a selected code.
A tool showing the relationship between ABL qualifications and subjects for which that qualification is valid, it also shows the grades and associated tariff points for a qualification.
Tariff points data for collections from 17051 onwards, including in year views, change logs and 'all years history' search tool. Tariff data includes QUALTYPEID and ENTRYQUALRESULT combinations and their applicable tariff points and HESA tariff status. This data is used in the creation of the XTPOINTS derived field values.
Details of T-Levels from 23056 onward and associated weightings and tariff points, including an interactive tool to assist with deriving the tariff points for T-Levels awarded.
